After 0.5 mile the trail turns away from the rim and the distant views of Checkerboard Mesa and lands south of the park, to work its way across several pine-covered ridges on its way to the top of Cable Mountain. In the early spring, these ridges can be covered in deep snow, even when the lower sections of the trail are clear and hot. Going up to Cable Mountain during warm spells in February can be rewarding and remote, but bring your snowshoes and check with the rangers for current trail conditions.
