Situated in the lowland desert area in the southwest corner of Zion National Park, Coalpits Wash makes a great winter hike. It is teeming with wildlife, including eagles in the lowland cliffs, falcons in the canyons, and coyote and cougar. Although cold in December through February, it is not uncommon for daytime temperatures to reach the 50°F mark in these winter months, making hiking pleasant. The trail starts at the National Park Service fence, which forms the northern boundary of the parking area. There is a hiker’s gate through the fence. The trail parallels the wash through lowland sagebrush flats with scattered cottonwood trees lining the wash for about a mile, then turns east (right) along the base of the mesa for 0.75 mile. To the east you have good views of the cliffs and spires of the West Temple and Towers of the Virgin.
