The narrow gorge extends for several miles, exiting the narrow section just upcanyon from your car at the lower parking area. You’ll spend much of the time over the next few hours walking in the stream over rounded cobble rock. Shoes or boots with good ankle support are necessary. Although the straight-line distance is short, the many meanders of the stream make for a longer hike. Be sure to watch for Flanigan Arch high up on the north wall, about 1 mile below the confluence of Ashdown and Rattlesnake Creeks. The gorge section deepens to over 1000 feet. A variety of plant and animal life make their home in the gorge, including delicate bluebells, wild marionberries, ponderosa pine, and many avian species.
