The climb is hot and dry, with many long switchbacks, ascending the faces of several different ridges. For most of the climb you are exposed to the sun. Please do not shortcut the switchbacks! Help keep the trail in good condition by sticking to the main trail. When you top out at Stewart Pass, a welcome cool breeze blows up the west face of the range. Even on hot days the breeze can be cool, so bring a jacket. Hawks and falcons float in these breezes on the west face. The Wellsville Range is a known migratory birding area. You may want to bring binoculars for better views of the raptors.

The Coldwater trail is ill-designed, ill-constructed and woefully maintained. It is also hardly used. Willows and ash choke the north aspects, destroying the tread and causing abrupt grade changes. This trail should be removed both from this guide and from the FS inventory. Use Deep Creek instead--that trail is a joy.
