Day Hikes in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks

This is an okay trail that offers some beautiful views of Morro Rock and the snow covered peaks of the back country as well as some nice views of the Middle Fork of the Kaweah. The biggest problem is that it never strays far enough from the busy General's Highway to give you the peaceful wilderness feeling. You hear and see the highway just about the whole length of the trail, which detracts from the hike in my opinion. We started at Hospital Rock and hiked toward Potwisha, electing to go down to the river instead of to the campground, which made it a little nicer. Overall....not bad for a winter hike, but there are better options for sure. If you are from out of town...do something else. If you frequent the park...worth a shot in the winter. I could not even imagine doing it in summer...would be broiling hot. Also...I took my teenage daughter and one of their friends and the first 1/4 mile made me very nervous as a slip or mis step would lead to a really nasty and possible fatal tumble about 500 feet down to the pavement of the General's Highway. I am not scared of heights at all, but this made me nervous with the kids. If you have real little ones I would call this a deal breaker.
