I returned from for doing one half of this high trail loop 09/11/05. And thought it was fantastic. I started at Happy Ilse and hiked the Muir trail past the half dome cut off and down to the merced lake ranger station then up the west side of the merced river past Washburn lake but then went up over Red peak pass (11700 ft)as aposed to finnishing from the other side of the loops. down past Ottaway lks
to the Illuette creek past mono meadow and back to the Yos val via the Panarama trail. The pass was cool but if done over I would have finished the loop as on the map.The whole area is full of breathtaking scenery with gorgeous waterfalls the next one ouidoing the last one. Plenty of places for water and good camping areas beyond the designated sites. trails are easy to follow well marked at intersections. YOU WILL have to take bear canisters but they turned out to be not much of a hassle. Did not see one bear but was warned they would be swarming all over. Allow an extra day to drive over to see the Maraposa sequia grove. You should figgure about 6 days to do the loops easily unless you are in bad shape . Great trip! firstname.lastname@example.org
