This is a pleasant hike across broad mesas with amazing vistas of much of the eastern Gila Wilderness and Black Range. The grasslands and pine parks are surprisingly lush in the spring and after summer rains. Off- trail exploration of a remote twisting canyon tributary of the East Fork Gila River brings added adventure, a highlight of which is the East Fork itself. This mesa meander in the east end of the Gila Wilderness can be done as a long 16.4-mile day hike loop on the trail system or, preferably, as an overnight backpack leaving the trail for an off-trail descent of Tom Moore Canyon to its mouth at the East Fork Gila River. The hike between the two trailheads can be done in either direction with equal difficulty.
