This extended high- country backpacking route avoids all but one major water crossing, so it’s especially suitable during periods of high water when river crossings can be hazardous. The one river crossing is just above White Creek on the West Fork. The river is braided in this stretch and therefore one of the easier places to cross. This route has the added virtue of passing by one of the more iconic spots along each of two major Gila forks: White Creek Flat on the West Fork and The Meadows on the Middle Fork. Both places have excellent campsites that can serve as a base for further exploration up and downstream.
