The search for prehistoric cliff dwellings doesn’t usually present much opportunity to venture into the high country, but here’s a trek that will take you upward of 8,000 feet. On a dirt road and later on a hiking trail, you’ll pass through groves of quaking aspen, stands of towering pines, and lush green meadows before reaching a remarkably well-preserved ruin in Hammond Canyon in Manti-La Sal National Forest. The Three Fingers Ruin, as it is called, is located 500 feet above the bottom of the canyon. James H. Gunnerson, who conducted an archaeological survey of the area in 1959, determined that the dwelling had nine rooms when it was built between A.D. 900 and 1200 by Native Americans affiliated with the Mesa Verde branch of the Ancestral Pueblo people.
