This is a pretty quick hike up to the top of Flagg Mountain. The views are ok, though I wish I would have called ahead to go up the lookout tower. The cabins are kind of creepy, but cool. Note the fire break leading from the tower to the cabins is STEEP and rocky so be careful. There isn't much of a parking area at the trailhead (just the side of the road). Overall a nice, fairly easy, hike.
Had a MUCH different experience than Jeff did. Trailhead is well-marked (after I found it). Directions to the trail are POOR. Thought it was near the road to the summit ... there was a "No Trespassing" sign and the gate was closed. An older man in a pickup came up, and was nasty - threatened me with calling the sheriff if I didn't "get out!" I eventually found the trailhead, but the map posted there showed the trail didn't go anywhere near the summit. ??????
Beware. This is a part of Alabama which gives the state its (unfortunate) reputation.
trail road is not marked, but easy enough to find. the whole path up is a dirt road (we met one group that cheated and drove up), but it's nice and wide. overall a nice hike with the uphills spaced enough for you to catch your breath. views from the top are great, even on a hazy cloudy day. there were hunters around, but they seemed unalarmed by our presence. great day hike. if you need water or any other random supply, better to stop at the gas station right off the highway, there's nothing after that.
