Lava beds national monument is a land smothered by recent lava flows, pocked with cinder cones, devoid of all surface water. A world both hostile and fascinating, it’s almost entirely visible from the fire lookout atop Schonchin (SKON-chin) Butte (5,253').

Incredible location! The reason this isnt a 5 star is the trail is well worn from cattle. There where several herds of cattle that I came across. Petterson lake, Amazing! Awsome fishing (I caught 30+ large trout) There are many lakes and trails around that arnt on all the maps. If you go you have to check out Devils Horn, a local told me about it, incredible.
