Veteran Salt Lake mountaineer and environmental activist Alexis Kelner craves solitude, something he struggles to find in Salt Lake County’s canyons. Now, when he wants to be alone, Kelner heads south to 11,928-foot Mt. Nebo, the highest point in Utah County. “I love its high alpine characteristics,” Kelner said of the 28,170-acre Mt. Nebo Wilderness Area. “The panoramas and vistas of the basin and range area are phenomenal. Nebo still has a nice wildness to it that is sometimes disappearing from other parts of the Wasatch.” The goal of most Nebo explorers is to reach the mountain’s north summit, the highest point in the Wasatch Range. But one of the appeals to reaching this place is the variety of routes a person can take. Kent Cornaby, recreation ranger for the Spanish Fork Ranger District, said hikers can select long, gradual ascents that take all day or shorter, steeper hikes for the adventurous, experienced, and physically fit.
