A tough route into the Maze for hikers without four-wheel-drive vehicles. For hikers who don’t have a four-wheel-drive vehicle or don’t want to drive the Maze roads, the North Trail provides access to the Maze. It’s for serious backpackers, though, since it’s about 14 miles one-way to the Maze Overlook—the first 5.6 miles on designated trail (the route featured in this hike) and the rest on primitive roads. When you get to the Maze Overlook Trailhead, it’s a short but tough mile-long drop into the Maze, where you can camp at-large per park regulations.
