A short, uphill walk to a big arch accessed by a four-wheel-drive road. Just before the end of Horse Canyon Road is the trailhead sign for Castle Arch Trail and a spot to pull off the main road. From here the trail heads west through a heavily vegetated valley on a slightly uphill grade, nicely carpeted with oak leaves, but a bit primitive and brushy in places.
It is a real treat for students of high desert vegetation. You can see the arch throughout most of the hike. However, the trail doesn’t go to the arch, and in fact has no clearly definable end. Instead it just gets more and more faint, and you’ll know when it’s time to take one last look at the arch and head back to your vehicle.
