A day hike to Sugar Knoll with an option to Red Cave. This route offers several manageable day-hiking options, visiting the spectacular high country at the base of the Elkheart Cliffs. These destinations are well-known to local residents but receive little attention from others, so these hikes offer a fairly good opportunity for solitude. The Sugar Knoll route travels right to the base of the Elkheart Cliffs, while the Red Cave route visits an impossibly narrow slot canyon carved into red sandstone.

The trail is hard to find. You can drive a 4x4 vehicle to the Red Cave and halfway to Sugar Knoll. Turn right at the Sugar Knoll B&B in Mt. Carmel. (not the junction) follow the dirt road, cross the river and go through the gate. Keep left after the gate. Follow the trail up the hillside on your right. Keep on the sandy trail as you are heading south. The trail will fork before decending down. The left road takes you to Sugar Knoll. The right takes you to Red Cave. Going to Red Cave you will travel down a steep rocky spot. Travel all the way down then turn left. Follow the was and it will take you right to the entrance of Red Cave. The slot canyon is awesome. Daylight shines from above giving the sandstone the appearance of reds, yellows, oranges and pinks. there are some rough spots you will need to climb up and you'll need to wedge yourself up through. The canyon keeps going when you think you're all the way through. Small children will need to be leifted up in several areas. A rope would be helpfull along with some gloves. Well worth the obstacles.
