A wilderness route down the East Fork of the Virgin River through spectacular canyon country, then out via a difficult scramble over a poorly marked route. This route follows the East Fork of the Virgin River into Parunuweap Canyon, one of the most spectacular and unknown canyons in southwestern Utah. The upper reaches of the canyon are open and fairly arid, while The Barracks’ lower end is made up of slot canyons with towering walls. The cleft lay along John Wesley Powell’s route during his explorations of the early 1870s. Powell’s party took several weeks to lead a string of pack mules through the canyon, working its way past obstacles such as Labyrinth Falls, now considered impassable without mountaineering gear.
