A backpack along closed roads to the heart of the Cabeza Prieta Mountains. This route follows established jeep roads along the flats to the south of Cabeza Prieta Peak, then swings northeast to reach Cabeza Prieta Pass, one of the few low gaps in this jagged range. The trek begins by following a well-worn jeep trail north between jagged ridges of granite. The wind has whittled away at the pale stone, carving out fascinating grottoes and honeycombs.
