A long day hike to the summit of the tallest peak in the Galiuro Mountains. This route ascends along the North Fork of Ash Creek, then climbs strenuously to the top of the highest summit in the Galiuros. Upon reaching the eastern slopes of Bassett Peak, the path zigzags upward across brushy slopes dotted with young Douglas firs.
There is no established trail to the top of the peak, but a good route can be had by following the main trail to a saddle south of the peak, then bushwhacking up the ridgeline to the summit. A trail register is located atop this tallest peak of the Galiuros, and magnificent views spread in all directions. The Winchester Mountains rise directly to the southeast, while the long chain of the Galiuros stretches away to the north, uninterrupted for 50 miles. The Rincons and Santa Catalinas are clearly visible to the west, while the Pinaleños crowd the eastern horizon.
