You will have sweeping vistas that stretch from canyon country to Colorado’s San Juan Mountains as you reach 10,700 feet in this landmark cluster of peaks. This island range began as magma rising against the overlying sedimentary rock, creating a dome. The magma cooled before breaking through, and erosion wore the overlying sedimentary layers away, exposing the laccolithic mountains we see today. June through October is a pleasant period, but October’s general hunting season makes this a place to avoid.
