Misleadingly named, Nine Mile Canyon actually is a 40- mile-long trough between the Bad Land Cliffs and the West Tavaputs Plateau that drains into the Green River. The name is from a map prepared by the 1872 government expedition led by Major John Wesley Powell, who used the canyon as the site of a nine-mile survey triangulation. A true gallery of spectacular Native American rock art, as well as natural beauty, it is under pressure today from energy-development activity, which many feel endangers the fragile, irreplaceable archaeological treasures found here. At the end of Nine Mile Canyon Road is an added bonus: the gorgeous cream-colored cliffs that flank the 4WD trail through North Frank’s Canyon. If you access it from Nine Mile Canyon, you will be driving up North Frank’s Canyon to Wrinkle Road. It is often taken in the down-canyon direction, ending at Nine Mile Canyon.
