Hiking Northern Arizona

While there is great scenery on parts of this loop, I rate it just so-so overall. The trail starts up Abineau Canyon, which is pleasant, but uninspiring. After about 1.5 miles the trail enters an avalanche run-out area, which it follows until the intersection with the Abineau Canyon Road (closed to vehicles). Above the road the route continues to follow an avalanche chute to the North Ridge of Humphreys. The chute is a real slog with difficult scree. The payoff at the ridgeline is great views to the north, and also a nice vantage on Humphreys itself. I found the walk down the ridge enjoyable, and had no difficulty with routefinding. This is a quality hike, but I've enjoyed off-trail routes in other areas of the San Francisco Peaks considerably more than this one (particularly the Shultz Pass - Schultz Peak - Doyle Peak loop).
