This climb, on Babbitt ranchland is north of Flagstaff on Route 89. Once you turn back toward the crater, it can be a bumpy ride. The crater is all cinder, so can be frustrating as you try to make progress. Views from the top, however, are breath-taking. The San Francisco Peaks tower to the south, the Painted Desert to the east and Navajo Nation and Grand Canyon to the north. There is no bad view. DO NOT attempt to step into the crater!!!! You are unlikely to see a soul out here, but, be cautious, bovine are everywhere.
A great short hike of a "textbook-example" cinder cone with a GREAT crater at the top. Best cinder cone I've ever climbed.
