Hole-in-the-Rock Road is about 55 miles of graded dirt and gravel connecting UT 12 near the town of Escalante to the Hole-in-the-Rock historical site and overlook on the shore of Lake Powell. The areas profiled in this chapter follow the corridor of Hole-in-the-Rock Rd. Most of the road is suitable for 2WD sedans. The last 6 miles, where the road enters the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, are rougher, and 4WD with high clearance is required. Trailheads along the road are located on the Kaiparowits Bench. A few miles of hot, sandy walking are the norm before the canyons narrow and become more interesting.
