The long, narrow El Modena Open Space, a satellite of Santiago Oaks Regional Park in the city of Orange, preserves a steep-sided miniature mountain range,
clothed in a tough mixture of drought-resistant cactus and sage scrub vegetation, and underlain by colorful andesite and
pyroclastic rock—volcanic rock dating back some 15 million years.
