This description covers the western section of the Trail of the Coeur d’Alenes, the part that is closest to the Spokane–Coeur d’Alene area. The 42-mile length of this route is too long for a day hike, and backpacking possibilities are limited because of the lack of campsites close to the trail. For these reasons, the best way to hike this trail is with a support shuttle from a base camp or other lodging close to the route.
Good places for shuttle pickup and drop-off are mentioned in the hike description as shuttle points. Much of the land along this part of the Trail of the Coeur d’Alenes is within a wildlife management area. Take your time along this easy trail and enjoy the wildlife. There are interpretive signs at most of the waysides that are well worth reading.
