If you like to get a lot of elevation gain out of the way early, then this hike is for you. Right from the start, you’ll traverse a long series of switchbacks that pick up 1,000 feet in 1.5 miles. Then the trail levels off for a few miles before another steep ascent to Deer Lake. Deer Lake is a great place to stop for lunch, and maybe catch a few neglected brook trout.
