This is one of those places where you go to be alone. Toquer Lake is the only body of water in the area deserving of the designation “lake.” It’s not on the way to anywhere else, so very few hikers bother checking it out. But if you’re looking for a short, mild hike that leads to serene scenery and a great chance for some genuine solitude, then look no further. Toquer Lake offers an exquisite setting, but better campsites can be found about 0.25 mile below the lake. Everything you need is found near the lake. A cold, free-flowing spring on the north side provides drinking water, and firewood is virtually everywhere throughout the heavily timbered terrain. If you’re lucky, the lake will even yield a few of its brook trout for your evening meal. But don’t expect great fishing.
