A lot of equestrians use this area. Between Governor Dern Lake and the Pinto Lake area there are lots of places to graze your horses and plenty of roomy campsites. Once you get past Hades Pass, the journey is a gentle ride through the pine forests of the West Fork of the Rock Creek Drainage. Or you can avoid the steep pass and reach Governor Dern Lake from the Highline trailhead. It is a couple of miles longer this way, but it may be easier on the animals. There is a campfire and firewood gathering restriction within 0.25 mile of Governor Dern, Pinto, and Rainbow Lakes.
