This park is one of many places bearing the name of David Thompson, a tribute to the impact of the Canadian explorer and mapmaker. During his 28-year, 55,000-mile exploration of the Northwest, he settled nearby, from 1809 to 1811, and established a trading post, Saleesh House, named for the local Indians. The tribes demonstrated their respect for him and their awe of his telescope and mapping instruments by calling him Koo-koo-sint (man who looks at the stars). Like many campgrounds set amid a canopy of towering pines, the lack of understory affects privacy, but these sites are roomy, well spaced, and peaceful.
