The Skookum Butte National Recreation Trail (304) is one of the more interesting day hikes in the heavily logged Elk Meadows area. A modified L-5 lookout still stands atop its natural summit fortifications, which require only 45 minutes to reach via the route described below. The mountaintop scene shows off a variety of high peaks, including some of the Bitterroots’ lower and lesser known summits.

The Skookum Butte National Recreation Trail (304) is one of the more interesting day hikes in the heavily logged Elk Meadows area.
