The hike to Hidden Lake—the largest lake in the Powell Ranger District—provides a pleasant summer foray into some nice country. Much of the forest along the trail and around the lake burned in 2007, so the hike now provides a very different experience than in prior years. Chances are good that you will not be alone. The McConnell Mountain Trail provides arduous passage to a mountain outpost that—according to one veteran fire watchman—typically sees fewer than two dozen visitors each summer. Though not exceptionally high, the summit of Bear Mountain offers a striking panorama of the surrounding country. Water is unavailable over long segments of the trail, which is well maintained in spite of the light traffic.
