The rough trail leading to Spruce Lake, a little-known tarn 2 miles southwest of Bear Creek Pass, offers a more challenging trip than most other day hikes in the area. The trail is in fair condition over much of its length—flooded tread and downed trees are frequent obstacles along the way—but its good scenic value and light use should still hold much appeal for the discriminating hiker. The trail begins by following an old roadbed west from the Bear Creek Trailhead and soon meets the Spruce Creek Trail. Taking the left-hand fork, the route continues its descent over the protest of downed trees and shallow pools of standing water to reach Bear Creek. Fallen logs provide dry passage over this stream.
