Beginning on the outskirts of the Bitterroot Valley, the Ward Mountain Trail climbs 4,850 feet in 6.3 miles to reach a former lookout site at the summit. An undertaking of nearly medieval brutality on a hot August afternoon, the Ward Mountain Trail is suitable only for those in reasonably good physical condition. Quite possibly this is the single most exhausting climb in the Bitterroots.
