Despite its proximity to Missoula and to several very popular Bitterroot trails, this route is more lightly used than you might expect—at least beyond the Bass Creek overlook points in the first 0.5 mile. Well marked and easy to follow for the first mile, this scenic route becomes difficult to discern as it approaches tree line—and vanishes altogether upon reaching exposed scree above 8,600 feet.

Although the lake was quite low, and the sun hot the day we went the payoff of the falls at Rock Creek on the far end of the lake made it more than worthwhile. Great hike and beautiful mountain views.

Easy hike around a fairly large mountain reservoir. Nice series of falls at west end of lake.

This trail is a great loop for getting back into the swing of things. It's great for families. You'll be in the midst of hikers, boaters, and horsemen/women. There are geocaches, letterboxes, and benchmarks to be found here as well! I saw tons of lovely flowers and a pileated woodpecker. The waterfall is a good midway lunch spot.
