The trail along Sweeney Ridge offers good scenic value, a variable course with frequent grade changes, and a selection of possible campsites and turnaround points. The 10-mile round-trip to Peterson Lake is especially nice, and longer trips into the North Fork headwaters are well within the abilities of most day hikers, making this trail an especially popular choice for hikers in the Missoula area. It remains a personal favorite: Sweeney Ridge was among the handful of trails I visited repeatedly while researching the first edition of this book.
