With a nickname like the Magic City, a town has a reputation to live up to! Billings grew so fast when it was founded that people said it seemed to have almost magically appeared from nowhere. Today, visitors can find magic in the city and its surroundings. Prominent and colorful sandstone cliffs rise from the Yellowstone River at the north and east edges of the city. From atop the Rimrocks, as the locals call these bluffs, one can see dramatic views of the Yellowstone Valley. Present-day Billings is Montana’s largest city, with a population of about 86,000.
