The damming of the Missouri River at Fort Peck created the fifth largest reservoir in the world. Fort Peck Lake is 134 miles long, with 1,520 miles of shoreline, more shoreline than the state of California. A drive across the top of the dam to the power plant and museum brings home the immensity of the project. Fort Peck Lake, like most reservoirs, is easiest to appreciate via power boat, but there are still numerous activities of interest to families without boats. The destinations include: Power Plant and Museum, Flat Lake, Leo Coleman Wildlife Exhibition Pasture, Dredge Cuts Swim Beach, Downstream Campground and Day-Use Area, Beaver Creek Nature Trail, The Pines Recreation Area, Charles M. Russell National Wildlife Refuge, and James Kipp Recreation Area.
