As the city flatlands give way to mountain foothills south of Bozeman, canyons wind into the Gallatin Mountains. From the city’s edge it is possible to explore biking and hiking trails in several canyons, including Sourdough, Leverich, and Hyalite, and the Cottonwood Drainage. The Hyalite has been extensively managed for recreation while most of the other canyons have some housing developments in relatively undisturbed Forest Service land. There are hiking trails to be found on the Forest Service land, and bike trails have been developed in some of these areas, too. This eTrail provides detailed information on family-friendly things to do. The destinations include: South Cottonwood Trail 422 and Mystic Lake.
