The roar of the cascading water led Captain Meriwether Lewis of the Lewis and Clark Expedition to these five falls and Giant Springs—important landmarks on the Missouri River. The town of Great Falls was literally built around the Missouri River, and in the early 1870s Great Falls became a major trade center because of it.
