To the west of the small town of Augusta, the scenic Sun River cuts through steep canyons and sheer cliffs as it flows out from the Scapegoat Wilderness Area, part of the Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex. The area surrounding the Sun River in the Rocky Mountain Front offers some recreational activities for families interested in exploring the wilderness boundaries. There are well-maintained Forest Service trails and campgrounds here, with interpretive signs noting area features. There is also a mostly undeveloped wildlife management area. From the mountains, the Sun River traverses the plains until it joins the Missouri River at Great Falls. Diversion dams and long distances between access sites make floating the Sun more of a challenge than most families will want to accept. It is still a delightful river to enjoy from shore, especially in the dramatic Sun River Canyon. Along the south fork of the Sun River is the Benchmark wilderness access, the most popular entry into the Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex. A lake and a couple of easy trails in this area may be enjoyed by families.
