To the south on the Missouri River, Canyon Ferry Reservoir is one of the most popular local recreation areas for Helena residents. In fact, because of its high use, Canyon Ferry is considered Montana’s most popular recreation site. Once you see the lake you will understand why it’s a favorite spot. This is an easy place to spend a rewarding day or longer vacation.
Keep your eyes open for wildlife around the lake and surrounding area as you have a good chance of seeing bighorn sheep, mountain goats, deer, beavers, geese, waterfowl, American white pelicans, ospreys, and shorebirds. In the fall, you will see migratory eagles which congregate here to feed on spawning kokanee salmon. Other interesting Canyon Ferry features are the petrified wood, agate, and fossils which can be found on the lake’s beaches. This eTrail provides detailed information on family-friendly things to do. The destinations include: Canyon Ferry Visitor Center, Riverside Campground and Eagle Viewing Area, and Canyon Ferry Wildlife Management Area.
