Another popular recreation site, the Rattlesnake Valley Recreation Area and Wilderness, extends north from Missoula. The short trails along Rattlesnake Creek provide good biking and walking. No need to worry—the name does not reflect the presence of rattlesnakes! Backpacking is permitted in the high-country wilderness area. Although mountain bikes are not permitted in the wilderness area they are allowed in the recreation areas. Rattlesnake Creek is part of Missoula’s water supply, so visitors are asked to be careful about stream pollution.
