Blue Mountain Recreation Area is a popular 5,500-acre outdoor destination only two miles from Missoula. An army military reservation was once located here. In 1 986 the land was designated as a recreation area, and a network of multi-use trails was established. The picturesque landscape, part of the Lolo National Forest, includes a grassy valley bottom adjacent to several mountain peaks. Vista Point is a 4,030-foot rounded hilltop that offers unobstructed panoramas in every direction. The dog-friendly trail to the point crosses meadows and loops through a ponderosa pine and Douglas fir forest.
