The Clark Fork of the Columbia River flows through a narrow cleft in Hellgate Canyon between Mount Sentinel and Mount Jumbo before continuing through the heart of Missoula. An unnamed footpath in Ben Hughes Park follows the north bank of the river for a half mile between University Mountain, towering more than 2,500 feet above the trail, and Mount Jumbo, stretching to 1 ,300 feet on the north side of the trail. This short, level route is a hidden gem with sandy beaches, cottonwoods, and low-elevation pine groves.
