Waterworks Hill and Randolph Hill are the grassy slopes that lie north of Missoula on the west side of Rattlesnake Valley. The hills were the site of the well-known peace sign, a Missoula landmark that could be seen across the Missoula Valley for 25 years. Perched near the summit of Randolph Hill, the sign was dismantled, despite protests, and removed in 2001 . A new peace sign has since been installed lower down the hillside. This hike climbs Waterworks Hill along the windswept, treeless ridge to the summit of Randolph Hill, passing the site of the former peace sign. The loop hike returns down Cherry Gulch, a wooded draw with shrubs and scattered cottonwoods. Atop the ridge are sweeping vistas across Missoula, the Rattlesnake Valley, Mount Jumbo, Mount Sentinel, and the Bitterroot Mountains.

Even as Missoula cooked in the upper 90's, this trail remained cool and empty one weekday afternoon. We really enjoyed this short 3.5-miler which was perfect for my pregnant wife and for me after a long day at work.
