Mount Jumbo lies just north of Mount Sentinel, Hellgate Canyon, and the Clark Fork River in the Mount Jumbo Recreation Area. The north end of the recreation area is a winter range for elk and mule deer (Hike 12). It is closed to hikers through May 1. The hike to the prominent Loyola High School L in the south end of the recreation area—this hike—is open year round. The trail is less crowded than the University of Montana M Trail (Hike 22) but has equally rewarding views of Missoula, the Rattlesnake Valley, and the surrounding mountains.
