Spring Gulch forms on the southwest flank of Stuart Peak and joins with Rattlesnake Creek at the south end of the Rattlesnake National Recreation Area just north of Missoula. The strenuous Stuart Peak Trail parallels Spring Creek seven miles, branching off the main Rattlesnake corridor to the wilderness boundary beneath 7,960-foot Stuart Peak. This easier loop hike climbs up Spring Gulch around both sides of Spring Creek on old cow paths and a farm lane. Remnants from century-old homesites, vacated in the 1 930s, can be spotted in the main valley and Spring Gulch. Watch for building foundations and old apple orchards.
