The glacially carved Rattlesnake Mountains form the northern backdrop of Missoula Valley. The headwaters of the West Fork Gold Creek begin at the northern base of 7,447-foot Mineral Peak in the upper Rattlesnake Wilderness. The West Fork Gold Creek Trail traverses the north slope of the creek drainage to Primm Lake. The tree-lined alpine lake rests in a scenic depression at the foot of Mineral Peak. From the lake, the trail zippers down the east wall of Rattlesnake Canyon to Rattlesnake Creek in a stunningly gorgeous setting of towering cliffs and giant larch trees.
