The Horse Butte Lookout is a Forest Service fire tower. The uphill trail is an unpaved road that leads thorough open meadows that are often covered with wildflowers and an old growth Douglas fir forest. From 450 feet above the lake are views of the Madison Arm, Hebgen Lake, Edwards Peninsula, Yellowstone National Park and the Continental Divide. It is an excellent spot to view birds, including bald eagles, osprey and pelicans.
