The North Fork of Grove Creek begins in the upper reaches of Mount Maurice, south of Red Lodge, and flows through arid Tolman Flat en route to the Clarks Fork of the Yellowstone. The hike follows the creek from the Meeteetse Trail, an old wagon route built by the U.S. Army in 1 881 that connected Red Lodge with Clark and Meeteetse, Wyoming. From Red Lodge, the scenic dirt road weaves its way along the eastern face of the Beartooth Mountains.
